Somerset serves as the northern anchor for this study of Pennsylvania’s highland terrain, where the residential streets of S Center Ave and S Edgewood Ave give way to the rural drainages of Coxes Creek and Kimberly Run. The landscape is characterized by a series of small, discrete settlements such as Murdock, Shamrock, and Roberts, which are connected by a network of local roads including Village Rd and Stutzman Town Rd.

Further south, the terrain becomes increasingly complex as it approaches the Casselman River and the dramatic Casselman Gorge. This area contains several localized landmarks of interest to genealogists and historians, including Saint Johns Cem and the small communities of Blackfield and Mineral Spring. The presence of Negro Mountain and the deep incision of Beachdale Hollow define the southern topography, where the smaller hamlets of Shober, Althouse, and Burkhelder sit near the winding course of Buffalo Cr.
