The Black River carves a deep boundary between the Fort Apache Indian Reservation and the San Carlos Indian Reservation in this high-altitude Arizona landscape. The terrain is defined by the massive Natanes Plateau, which drops away into complex drainage systems like Stove Canyon and Bobcat Basin. Remote water management and cattle ranching infrastructure are evident throughout, from the Black River Pumping Station and its associated Aqueduct to numerous livestock tanks such as Stallion Tank and Bobcat Tank.
