San Carlos serves as the focal point of this 2014 topographic study of the Gila and Graham County border region. The landscape is defined by the winding course of the San Carlos River and the high desert plateaus of Black Mesa and Sontag Mesa. The transportation network is built around Bureau of Indian Affairs routes, such as Bia-1110 and Bia-900, which provide access to the remote San Carlos Airport and the geological formation at Natural Corral. Water management is a critical feature of this arid environment, evidenced by numerous tanks like Agency Tank and Holdup Tank scattered across the drainages of Sevenmile Wash and Cassadore Cr. Significant elevation changes are marked by Cassadore Mtn in the northeast and the deep cuts of Black Mesa Canyon, illustrating the transition from the river valley to the rugged uplands of Antelope Flats.
