About this map

The Brule River and Pine River carve a distinct boundary across this rugged borderland between Michigan and Wisconsin. Settlement is sparse, anchored by the stop at Naults along the Chicago and North Western railroad line which traverses the northern reaches of the Mastodon district. Much of the southern landscape is defined by the dense tracts of the Nicolet National Forest, a terrain of glacial depressions filled with isolated water bodies such as Whisker Lake, Camp Thirteen Lake, and Cruiser Lake. The map details a complex hydrological network where Wakefield Creek and Kieper Creek drain into the primary river systems. Strategically positioned on a high point, the Florence Lookout Tower overlooks the forest canopy, while scattered gravel pits suggest local industrial activity amidst the vast timberlands.
