Settled by German immigrants, the area's religious and community roots are evidenced by the density of cemeteries and churches, such as Saint Stephens Lutheran Church and the nearby Saint Stephens Lutheran Cem.

A complex water management system is visible throughout the quadrangle, including the Brinkman Ditch and Gantzville Ditch, which redirect water into natural channels like Lost Creek and School Creek. The intersection of Defiance, Henry, and Putnam counties is clearly marked, tracing the historical boundaries of the Great Black Swamp region.
