Following the river's path, the Unadilla Valley Railroad connects the larger settlement of New Berlin with smaller rail-side points like Sages Crossing and Davis Crossing. The terrain rising away from the valley is dotted with small one-room schoolhouses, including School No 3 and Dimmick Hollow Sch, which once served isolated farming communities.

Conservation efforts in the 1940s are evident in the large tracts of protected land, such as Hunts Pond State Forest and Wagner Farm State Forest.
