New Hill and the surrounding unincorporated communities of Bonsal and Friendship sit at the intersection of rural heritage and suburban expansion in western Wake County. The landscape is defined by its significant water infrastructure, anchored by the Shearon Harris Reservoir to the south and the eastern finger of B Everett Jordan Lake in the northwest. These massive reservoirs reshape the traditional drainage of Beaver Creek and White Oak Creek, creating a mix of flooded lowlands and high ground.

The western edge of Apex shows rapid development with an intricate network of residential streets like Beaver Trail and Brickstone Drive. Small-scale aviation is represented by Deck Airpark near the Chatham County line, while the rail-oriented origins of these communities are still visible in the settlement patterns along the central transport corridor. Numerous smaller waterways, such as Utley Creek and Little Beaver Creek, continue to carve through the wooded terrain between the growing residential clusters.
