New Hill and the surrounding borderlands of Wake and Chatham counties are defined here by a massive infrastructure shift in the late twentieth century. The landscape is dominated by two large-scale water management projects: the Shearon Harris Reservoir to the south and B Everett Jordan Lake to the northwest. These man-made bodies of water altered the drainage patterns of older creek systems like Beaver Creek and White Oak Creek.

Genealogists and local historians can trace the traditional community centers that survived this transformation, including Bonsal and Friendship. Several country churches and cemeteries, such as Olive Chapel, Christian Chapel, and the Mt Zion Cem, remain as landmarks of the rural population. The emergence of modern industry is clearly visible with the large Power Plant facility situated along the reservoir, contrasting with the recreational areas like the Jordan Lake State Recreation Area.
