Bearfort Mountain and Kanouse Mountain define the structural grain of this North Jersey highlands landscape, where narrow valleys are filled by a chain of major water storage systems. The central corridor is dominated by the Pequannock River and the tracks of the New York Susquehanna and Western railroad, which historically served the small communities of Newfoundland and Charlotteburg. By the mid-20th century, the expansion of the regional watershed is evident in the presence of the Clinton Reservoir, Canistear Reservoir, and Oak Ridge Reservoir.
