About this map

The Cowpasture River carves a winding path through the heart of the George Washington National Forest in this 1960s study of western Virginia. The landscape is defined by the sharp, parallel ridges of the Appalachian Mountains, including Beards Mountain, Rough Mountain, and Short Mountain. Human settlement is concentrated in the river valleys and narrow gaps, notably at the resort community of Nimrod Hall and the village of Millboro Springs.
