The Connecticut River meanders through the heart of the Pioneer Valley in this late 19th-century survey, revealing a landscape defined by industrial villages and prominent academic institutions. Northampton serves as the central hub, surrounded by a constellation of manufacturing hamlets like Florence, Leeds, and Haydenville along the Mill River. These settlements were linked by a dense web of competing rail lines, including the Boston and Maine R.R. and the N.Y. N.H. and H. R.R., which bypassed the older river transport represented by the Ferry at Hatfield. To the east, the budding campuses of the Agricultural College and College at Amherst mark the region's intellectual development. The topography is anchored by the Holyoke Range, where Mt Holyoke and The Notch overlook the dramatic curve of the Ox Bow, a geological remnant of the river's shifting course near Hockanum.
