The Connecticut River winds through the heart of the Pioneer Valley, defining a landscape of fertile bottomlands and dramatic ridges during the late nineteenth century. Northampton serves as a major hub, its streets radiating outward toward the Insane Asylum and several industrial villages like Florence and Bay State. To the east, the academic character of the region is already well-established with the presence of Amherst and the Agricultural College.
