Norton Ridge Peak stands as the high point of this interior mountain landscape, where the Boise National Forest and Challis National Forest meet. The terrain is defined by a dense network of drainage systems, including Marble Creek, Norton Cr, and Canyon Creek, which flow through deep-cut valleys toward the Middle Fork Salmon River along the southern edge. The boundary between Valley County and Custer County traverses the high ridges and follows the Middle Fork canyon.
