Oak Hill and the surrounding coastal marshlands are defined by the convergence of federal conservation and space-age infrastructure along the Atlantic coast. The landscape is dominated by the Canaveral National Seashore and the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, which preserve large swaths of the Indian River Lagoon and Mosquito Lagoon. These protected waters are dotted with numerous small islands and shoals, including Bird Island and Onion Farm Island.
