Big Cypress National Preserve encompasses the majority of this landscape, where the flat, water-logged terrain of the Florida Everglades is defined by strands and prairies. Small settlements like Jerome, Copeland, and Ochopee are scattered along the north-south axis of Co Rd 29 and the east-west corridor of Tamiami Trl E. These communities represent thin ribbons of human habitation in a region dominated by hydrologic features like the Tamiami Canal Number C-4 and the Deep Lake Strand. The southern portion of the map reveals the transition toward the coast with the winding courses of Halfway Creek and the Turner River. Infrastructure is minimal, consisting largely of straight-line tracks such as Wagon Wheel Rd and Bird On Rd that penetrate the cypress and prairie landscape.
