Four Buttes rises above a landscape defined by seasonal drainages and a rectilinear road network in this section of eastern Montana. The terrain is marked by the winding course of Beaver Cr, which flows northward through the center of the survey area, joined by numerous tributaries such as Box Elder Cr and Hay Cr. This drainage system is a defining feature of the local topography, creating the coulees and breaks that interrupt the high plains.
