The Kickapoo River carves a deep, winding path through the Driftless Area of Vernon County, anchoring the settlements of Ontario and Rockton as it flowed in 2016. The landscape is defined by its dramatic relief, with narrow ridges like Fairview Ridge and Lowers Ridge separating numerous named hollows and valleys. To the east of Ontario, the peak of Wildcat Mtn and the landmark Flag Rock stand above Lamb Valley, while further south, Mt Pisgah overlooks the river's bends. This map documents a rural network of county highways and backroads, such as Cemetery Rd and Moon Ridge Rd, that follow the contours of the land. In the southern portion of the quadrangle, the community of Valley sits at the junction of Warner Cr and Caucut Valley, illustrating how early Wisconsin settlement patterns were dictated by the convergence of these fertile drainage basins.
