Palisade sits at the northern edge of Hitchcock County, straddling the border with Hayes County where the waters of Frenchman Creek and Stinking Water Cr converge. This 2017 study illustrates the complex water management system of the Republican River basin, featuring the Culbertson Canal and several local impoundments such as Krotter-Schlager Reservoir and Shackelford Reservoir. The landscape is defined by deep incisions in the high plains, including the historically significant Massacre Canyon and Beauvais Canyon, which cut through the tablelands toward the creek valleys.
