Pamlico Sound dominates the vast majority of this coastal survey, highlighting the delicate interface between the mainland waters and the Outer Banks. Along the eastern edge, the protected lands of the Cape Hatteras Natl Seashore appear as a narrow strip of land separating the sound from the Atlantic Ocean. The geography here is a complex system of shallow inlets and named points, where sediment and water create a shifting landscape of islands and marshes.
