The Y-shaped waters of Keuka Lake dominate this Finger Lakes landscape, splitting into the West Branch Keuka Lake around the prominent elevation of Bluff Point. At the northern tip of the lake, the village of Penn Yan serves as a primary hub for commerce and transport, where the Northern Central R. R. and the K. L. & A. R. R. converge.

Industrial activity at the turn of the century is evident along the outlet east of Penn Yan, where a series of milling sites including Milo Mills, Seneca Mills, and Keuka Mills utilized the falling water. The map traces the early transit corridors of the region, including the Electric R. R. route and numerous small lakeside landings like Chilsey Pt. and Ciaconia.
