Cumberland Mountain and Stone Mountain dominate this corner of Appalachia where the Kentucky-Virginia state line follows the high ridges of Harlan and Lee Counties. These settlements follow the valley floors carved by the North Fork Powell River and its tributaries like Puckett Creek.
