The White Salmon River cuts a deep corridor through the landscape, flanked by the Monte Cristo Range and Penny Ridge. This section of the river system, including the White Salmon Wild and Scenic River, is a vital ecological hub anchored by the Spring Creek National Fish Hatchery in the south. The terrain is defined by a succession of high points and ridges, from Timberhead Mtn to Underwood Mtn, largely protected within the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
