Mt. Calder rises sharply above the complex coastline of the Tongass National Forest, overlooking a network of islands and narrow channels. This coastal landscape is dominated by the western shores of Prince of Wales Island and the neighboring Kosciusko Island, separated from the open Gulf of Alaska by the Sumner Strait. The jagged shoreline is deeply indented by Shakan Bay and Calder Bay, revealing the intricate marine environment of Southeast Alaska.
