Mt Calder dominates the northern interior of this coastal terrain, its elevation dropping sharply toward the intricate shoreline of the Tongass National Forest. The landscape is defined by the deep indentations of Shakan Bay and Calder Bay, where a network of coastal features including Middle Island, Divide Island, and Hamilton Island breaks the waters of the Sumner Strait. These protected bays and inlets provided essential natural harbors and navigation points within the Alexander Archipelago.
