About this map

The industrial and agricultural corridors of Ontario County are defined here by a dense network of competing rail lines and hydraulic power sources. The Canandaigua Outlet carves through the northern landscape, feeding the growth of manufacturing centers at Shortsville and Manchester. Further east, the village of Clifton Springs serves as a major hub where the New York Central and Hudson River R. R. and the Lehigh Valley R. R. converge. To the south, the terrain transitions into the high ridges of Gorham and Potter, where the Northern Central R. R. follows the path of Flint Creek through Stanley and toward the village of Rushville. This 1899 survey captures a landscape of established hamlets such as Seneca Castle, Orleans, and Halls Corners connected by historic routes like Auburn Road and Preemption Road.
