Philpott Lake dominates this rugged corner of the Blue Ridge foothills, its deeply indented shoreline creating numerous peninsulas and points such as Beech Point and Horseshoe Point. The impoundment of the Smith River transformed this landscape, yet the map preserves the names of the older terrestrial world, including family-named heights like Brown Hill and Stuarts Knob. To the west, the smaller Fairy Stone Lake sits near the junction of Franklin, Patrick, and Henry counties.

Genealogists will find a high density of small family burial grounds throughout the hills, including the Dehart-Jones-Prilliman Cem, Ratcliff-Whitlow-Young Cem, and Stone-Bondurant-Johnson Cem. These sites, along with settlements like Prilliman and Mill Creek, indicate a deeply rooted rural community established long before the reservoir arrived. The transition from the high ridges down to the industrial outskirts of West Bassett is visible along the southern edge of the sheet.
