1960 Map of Phoenix

About this map

The Salt River and Gila River confluence anchors this mid-century view of Central Arizona, where the burgeoning footprint of Phoenix and Glendale contrasts with the surrounding agricultural and mining landscapes. To the west, the arid basin-and-range topography is defined by the Harquahala Mountains and the Vulture Mountains, the latter hosting the famed Vulture Mine. The map traces the vital transportation arteries of the era, including the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads, alongside major routes like U.S. Hwy. No. 60-70. Numerous auxiliary airfield locations, such as Luke AF No 1 through Luke AF No 8, highlight the significant military aviation presence in the Salt River Valley. Further south and east, the Gila River Indian Reservation and Maricopa Indian Reservation occupy the river corridors, while the Agua Fria River feeds south from Lake Pleasant toward the agricultural colonies of Litchfield Park and Avondale.
