The Mississippi River dominates this portion of Plaquemines Parish, where a thin ribbon of human activity follows the natural levees. Small communities such as Alliance, Phoenix, and Ironton are clustered along the riverbanks, protected by an extensive Levee system. This 1970s landscape reveals the complex drainage network required for habitation in the delta, featuring numerous man-made waterways like the Forty Arpent Canal and the Belair Canal.

Industry and infrastructure are integrated into the riverside settlements, evidenced by Industrial Waste Ponds near Alliance and several Drill Holes scattered through the marshy interior. Evidence of local history is found in the Belair Cem and the High Sch at Phoenix. East of the river, the landscape quickly transitions into a labyrinth of bayous and lakes, including Spanish Lake and Caskett Bayou, while the Aux Chenes River (Oak River) winds through the backswamp.
