The Vermilion River system dominates this section of the Superior National Forest, where the waterway winds southward through a landscape of dense wetlands and interconnected lakes. The northern reach of the river includes the dramatic Table Rock Falls, a significant hydrological feature in a region defined by its complex drainage network. To the east, numerous named bodies of water such as Picket Lake, Finstad Lake, and the smaller Maude Lake are linked by seasonal streams including Finstad Creek and Picket Creek. This 2019 survey documents the modern timber and access infrastructure within the forest, noting legacy logging routes like Hoffmans Spur B and Camp 97 Spur A. The southern portion is marked by the branching of Hilda Creek and several isolated basins like Lake Lon and Lake Alf, illustrating the intricate geography of the Iron Range backcountry.
