Picket Pin Mountain stands as the central landmark of this high-elevation terrain where the Gallatin National Forest meets the Custer National Forest. The landscape is defined by its complex drainage systems, with the Boulder River and West Stillwater River drawing from numerous mountain basins. Historical exploration and early mining interests are evidenced by scattered Prospects, a Prospect, and an Adit located near Mountain Iron and the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness boundary.

Water is a dominant feature, with several high-altitude lakes including Moccasin Lake, Camp Lake, and the sister waters of North Picket Pin Lake and South Picket Pin Lake. The presence of small Glaciers south of Picket Pin Mountain indicates the year-round cold and significant elevation of this part of the Beartooth range. Numerous gulches such as Lewis Gulch and Burnt Gulch cut through the Plateau, feeding the creeks that navigate this protected wilderness.
