The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument anchors the southwestern landscape of this region, protecting the geologic history surrounding Picture Gorge. The John Day River carves through the southern section, joined by Cottonwood Creek and Ferris Creek as it winds past the John Day Highway. The topography is defined by high-elevation features like Rudio Mountain, rising above Rudio Meadows, and the distinct formation of the Sugarloaf.
