John Day Fossil Beds National Monument dominates the western landscape of this Grant County region, preserving a world-renowned record of prehistoric life. The terrain is defined by dramatic geological formations, from the deep incision of Picture Gorge to the high vantage of Mid Mtn. Steep drainage systems like Waterspout Gulch and Sheep Gulch carve through the high desert plateaus, while the John Day River flows along the southern edge. Human activity is largely centered on ranching and recreation, evidenced by Land's Inn Ranch Airport and the Blue Basin Overlook Trail. Notable landmarks such as Hole in the Ground and Turtle Cove reflect the unique erosion patterns that have drawn geologists and paleontologists here for decades. The network of unimproved routes, including Franks Cr Rd and Dick Creek Rd, provides access to the high flats and timber basins.
