The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument anchors this high-desert landscape in Grant County, preserving a terrain defined by ancient geological shifts. The John Day River flows through the southern portion of the map near the famous Picture Gorge, a narrow passage through basalt flows that has served as a primary transit corridor for generations. Along the northern reaches, the elevation rises toward Rudio Mtn and the broad expanses of Sunflower Flat and Rudio Meadows.
