About this map

The Continental Divide snake-like ridge line defines this high-altitude landscape along the border of the Gunnison National Forest and San Isabel National Forest. Mining history is preserved in the remote upper reaches of the drainage, centered on the Pieplant Mine and the nearby Pieplant Mill (Site). These industrial remains, situated deep within what was later designated as the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, reflect the early extractive economy of the central Colorado Rockies. To the southwest, the Taylor River valley provides a lower-elevation corridor where the Dinner Station and Pieplant Cow Camp served as vital stopovers for travelers and ranchers. The map traces a network of high-country water features, from the headwaters of Illinois Creek to the Pothole Res No 2, all surrounded by prominent summits like Grizzly Peak and Jenkins Mountain.
