Hydrological engineering defines this coastal Carolina landscape, where the East Dismal Swamp has been carved into a network of drainage channels. Large-scale agriculture and land reclamation efforts are evident in the geometry of the Number 2 Canal, Number Three Canal, and the long, straight stretches of Railroad Bed Rd. These artificial waterways cut through the remnant wetlands of Flat Swamp to manage the low-lying terrain of the inner banks.
