Leland and the northern reaches of Forest City anchor this landscape along the Winnebago River and Lime Creek. The terrain is defined by a dense network of glacial depressions and ridges, most notably at the southern end where Pilot Knob rises near its namesake Pilot Knob Lake. This modern survey illustrates the organized township grid system typical of northern Iowa, with numerous family and township burial sites preserved across the countryside.
