Troy and Bucksnort anchor the upper reaches of this Driftless Area landscape, where the deeply carved valleys of Trout Run and Money Cr converge toward the larger Root River. The terrain is defined by the prominent Pilot Mound and the meandering river valley that dominates the southern half of the map. This area, spanning the intersection of Olmsted, Winona, and Fillmore counties, maintains a distinctly rural character. Local history and genealogy are preserved in the locations of the Pilot Mound Cem and Root Prairie Lutheran Cem. In the southeast, the North Branch Root River Reservoir and the small settlement of Wadden Valley illustrate the local hydrography and community development patterns along the river’s winding course.
