Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument defines the character of this landscape, where the deeply carved Missouri riverbed creates a stark transition between the river corridor and the high plains of Chouteau County. The Missouri Wild and Scenic River winds through the center of the sheet, framed by dramatic geological formations like the White Rocks and Fortress Rock. This area is characterized by its complex drainage network, where numerous coulees, including Crooked Coulee and Cut Bank Coulee, have cut deep paths into the surrounding plateaus. These features, along with the isolated Butcher Knife Canyon, reveal a terrain shaped by centuries of erosion. The absence of towns highlights the preservation of this corridor, which remains accessible primarily via unpaved routes such as Lonetree Trl and Butte View Rd.
