Pony Flats occupies a high plateau in Armstrong County, where the Llano Estacado begins its dramatic descent into the erosional breaks of the Texas Panhandle. This landscape is defined by the headwaters of the Prairie Dog Town Fork Red River, which has carved the massive Palo Duro Canyon and several prominent side-canyons including Bull Canyon and Horseshoe Canyon. The topography reveals a complex network of seasonal drainages such as Rush Cr, Cita Creek, and McFarland Cr that cut through the caprock.
