About this map

The Interbay Peninsula and the eastern shores of Pinellas County appear here during World War II, defined by a landscape transitioning from coastal marshes to strategic military and residential developments. At the heart of the peninsula, MacDill Field dominates the southern reaches, while to the north, the industrial maritime hub of Port Tampa and its Port Tampa Dock facilitate regional shipping. Across Old Tampa Bay, early residential footprints are visible at Snell Isle and Shore Acres, where planned streets meet the tidal inlets of Smacks Bayou and Papys Bayou. The connection between these two worlds is maintained by Gandy Blvd, traversing the bay. This 1943 survey, compiled by the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army, captures the area's geography before the post-war building boom, highlighting numerous islands such as Weedon Island and Picnic Island.
