Puget Sound and the high bluffs overlooking Poverty Bay define this mid-century landscape along the King and Pierce County line. Just before the post-war suburban boom transformed the region, the area remains a collection of distinct small communities and rural tracts. The Pacific Highway and Military Road serve as the primary north-south arteries, connecting coastal settlements like Woodmont Beach and Redondo to inland hubs like Algona and Milton.

Evidence of local development and community life is scattered throughout the interior, from the Federal Way Sch and Steel Lake Ch to the Evergreen Airfield located near Kits Corner. Recreational areas are well-established at Saltwater State Park and around numerous glacial lakes, including Star Lake, Steel Lake, and Lake Geneva. To the south, the industrial fingers of Northeast Tacoma begin to reach toward Hylebos Waterway, signaling the growing reach of the nearby port.
