The Deschutes National Forest encompasses the high country and canyonlands where the Metolius River begins its descent. This landscape is dominated by the steep escarpment of Green Ridge, a significant geological feature that divides the drainage basins and provides a high-elevation path for the Green Ridge Trl. Along the western edge, the Metolius Wild and Scenic River corridor protects a vital watershed fed by numerous tributaries including Candle Creek and Abbot Creek.
