The Palouse River valley serves as the central anchor for this portion of Latah County, where the small settlements of Princeton and Hampton are situated. The landscape transitions from the river bottomlands into the high timbered ridges of the St. Joe National Forest to the north. These uplands are defined by significant peaks such as Gold Hill and East Gold Hill, which are dissected by a dense network of drainages including Hoteling Creek, Arson Creek, and Nelson Creek.
