The small settlement of Promise and its nearby Cemetery anchor this mid-1990s survey of Wallowa County. The landscape is defined by the deep carving of the Grande Ronde River in the northwest corner, where the Wenana State Wildlife Area meets the northern boundary of the Umatilla National Forest. This era shows a high-elevation plateau transition where the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest dominates the eastern and southern reaches. The drainage network is complex, featuring Sickfoot Creek, Wallowa Creek, and Grossman Creek, which cut through named terrain features like Sickfoot Flat and McNutt Flat. The remote character of the area is emphasized by the presence of Bruce Camp and the winding course of Promise Road, tracing the ridgelines between deep canyons like Ward Canyon.
