Craters of the Moon National Preserve dominates this high-desert landscape in south-central Idaho, where the volcanic expanse of the Wapi Flow spreads across the county line between Blaine and Power counties. The terrain is characterized by the stark contrast between the basaltic lava fields and the adjacent Pleasant Valley. A few unpaved routes, including Gehring Rd, Rast Rd, and Wapi Rd, provide the only modern access through this sparsely inhabited region. The prominent namesake landmark, Rattlesnake Butte, rises in the southern portion of the sheet near the border of the lava flow, serving as a distinct navigational point in a vast area of volcanic formations and scrubland.
