Industrial activity and the high-elevation landscape of the Yampa Valley define this survey, conducted at a time of significant resource extraction in Routt County. The Energy Strip Mine and Edna Mine (Strip) dominate the central topography, supported by a large Tipple and numerous mines and drill holes scattered across the drainages. These operations contrast with the older educational landmarks of the rural district, including Foidel Sch and Trout Creek Sch, which served the scattered ranching and mining families of the area.

The terrain is characterized by the broad reaches of Twentymile Park and Eckman Park, separated by prominent heights like Pinnacle Peak and the namesake Rattlesnake Butte. Water management for both mining and agriculture is evident through several reservoirs, such as Res No 1 and Res No 2, along with the Koll Ditch No 1. Much of the southern portion of the sheet is protected within the Routt National Forest, where the land drops into narrow drainages like Mule Gulch and Bear Gulch.
