Carlsbad Caverns National Park defines the northern reaches of this landscape, where the Chihuahuan Desert meets the uplifted limestone of the Guadalupe Mountains. The terrain is a complex network of seasonal drainages and permanent water sources, notably the Rattlesnake Springs area and the unique Bottomless Lakes and Bottomless Lake Spring. These features represent critical riparian oases in an otherwise arid environment, providing a sharp contrast to the surrounding Yeso Hills and expansive desert flats.
