About this map

The Blackwater River snakes through this 1944 landscape, forming a natural boundary between Isle of Wight and Southampton counties. The area is characterized by an extensive network of wetlands, including Rattlesnake Swamp, Vittines Swamp, and Hickory Swamp, which dominate the low-lying terrain. Settlement patterns are concentrated at rural junctions such as Gwaltney Crossroads and Stotts Crossroads, while the McClelland area is anchored by the McClelland Sch. In the southern portion of the sheet, the Norfolk and Western railroad cuts across the swampy ground near Trucker Swamp. The persistence of rural life is evident in the numerous small congregations and education centers, from Mill Swamp Ch in the north to the Pinegrove Tabernacle and Shiloh Ch further south, illustrating the community structure of tidewater Virginia during the mid-1940s.
