Sierra Valley dominates the southern half of this landscape, where the flat floor of the high-altitude basin meets the steep, timbered slopes of the Plumas National Forest. The settlement of Beckwourth sits at the edge of this transition, historically significant as a gateway through the mountains via the nearby Beckwourth Genesee Rd. To the south, Hawley and Marble Hot Springs mark the more pastoral reaches of the valley, defined by a complex network of drainage channels including the N Channel Little Last Chance Cr and Dyson Slough.
