The Yuma Test Station and the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge define this arid landscape along the Colorado River basin during the mid-1950s. The topography is dominated by the Chocolate Mountains, Middle Mountains, and Trigo Mts, which are dissected by a network of drainage systems including Yuma Wash and Indian Wash.

Evidence of desert prospecting and early mining activity is visible at the Annie Mine and various unnamed Prospect sites throughout the ranges. The presence of numerous Jeep Trails cutting through the Castle Dome Plain suggests a period of transition as the area became increasingly utilized for military testing and conservation. These trails provide a rare look at the established routes used by miners and surveyors before the landscape was fully restricted by the Military Reservation Bdy.
